Telus Corporation became the only supplier of telephone service in Alberta when it purchased Edmonton Telephones Corporation from the city of Edmonton in 1995. In 1998, Telus and BC Tel stated that they were considering a merger. After a long period of negotiation, the merger was finalized in 1999. The name of the corporation was significantly modified to become the current Telus Corporation. The merger resulted in the formation of Canada’s second biggest telecommunications company, with a 22 percent market share, compared to Bell Canada’s 42 percent.
