History

HealthMarkets was founded in 1983 by Ronald Jensen under United Insurance Companies, Inc. (UICI) Through its focus on the then-untapped market of self-employed workers, the company was able to grow earnings by more than double between 1984 and 1985. In 1986, UICI made its first public stock offering.

In October 2004, The MEGA Life & Health Insurance Co, a subsidiary of UICI, acquired HealthMarket Inc, which was a small business insurer. Then, in 2005, a group of private equity investors headed by The Blackstone Group acquired HealthMarkets Inc, moving the company from public to private owned. The MEGA Life & Health Insurance Co. brand was officially renamed to HealthMarkets Inc to convey its new consumer focus.

The company offers health and life insurance to niche consumer and institutional markets. Through subsidiaries, the company issues policies covering individuals and families, the self-employed, association groups and small businesses. The company helps its customers shop for coverage that serves their specific needs. Other services include third-party administrative and distribution services for health care providers and other insurers.

History

The origin of the New York Stock Exchange can be traced to May 17, 1792, when the Buttonwood Agreement was signed by 24 stock brokers on Wall Street in New York City under a buttonwood tree. On March 8, 1817, the organization drafted a constitution and renamed itself the “New York Stock & Exchange Board.” (This name was shortened to its current form in 1863.) Anthony Stockholm was elected the Exchange’s first president.

The floor of the New York Stock Exchange in 1908
The first central location of the Exchange was a room rented for $200 a month located at 40 Wall Street.

The building was destroyed in the Great Fire of New York (1835), after which the Exchange moved to a temporary headquarters.

In 1863, it changed its name to the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).

In 1865, it moved to 10-12 Broad Street.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) was created in 1896 by Charles Dow, co-founder of Dow Jones & Company, a financial news publisher. This figure was calculated by tracking the stock prices of twelve different companies and taking their average.

Published in The Wall Street Journal, the DJIA quickly became a popular indicator of stock market activity.

The volume of stocks traded increased sixfold in the years between 1896 and 1901, and the NYSE needed a larger space to conduct business.

Eight New York City architects were invited to participate in a design competition for a new building and the Exchange selected the neoclassic design from architect George B. Post. Demolition of the existing building at 10 Broad Street and the adjacent lots started on May 10, 1901.

Avon History

In 1886, 34 years before women in the U.S. earned the right to vote, our founder, David H. McConnell, helped give them the chance to earn an independent income.

He didn’t set out to create a beauty company. In fact, McConnell was a traveling book salesperson and offered beauty products as an additional perk to his female customers. He saw that these women were more interested in the free perfume samples than the books – and that many of them stayed home while their husbands went off to work. Since women had a passion for his products and loved networking with other women, McConnell was inspired to recruit them as Sales Representatives. From a small New York City office, McConnell himself mixed the company’s first fragrances.

Cisco Meraki History

Meraki was funded by Google and Sequoia Capital. The organization started in Mountain View, California in 2006, and was then located in San Francisco. Meraki employed people who worked on the MIT roofnet project.

Meraki offers a complete cloud managed product family including wireless LAN, Ethernet switches, security appliances, and mobile device management, all built to simplify the challenges of modern, device and application-centric networks.

In 2007, Meraki selected San Francisco for their community-based Free the Net campaign. They started putting gateway devices in the Lower Haight neighborhood to provide Internet access and giving away repeaters. In the first year of the project, growth of the network was primarily into the Mission District. By October 2007, they estimated 20,000 distinct users (ever connected) and about 5 terabytes of data transferred in this network. In July 2008, Meraki said 100,000 people in San Francisco used its ‘Free the Net’ service. Since then, Meraki discontinued this public service, though many access points remain active, but with no connection to the Internet.

In May 2010 an agreement was announced with UK-based Cloud Distribution. On November 18, 2012 Cisco Systems announced it agreed to acquire Meraki for an estimated $1.2 billion.

Community Health Systems History

For nearly 30 years, our organization has been keeping healthcare close to home in cities and towns across the nation. Our affiliated hospitals deliver a wide range of health services and function as vitally important members of their local communities.

As one of the largest hospital organizations in the nation, our size provides an advantageous economy of scale and critical resources to help local hospitals identify and act on opportunities. As a result, these hospitals have made significant investments in healthcare services, physician recruitment, facility improvements, modern medical technology and, most importantly, an ever-strengthening commitment to clinical excellence.

Acquisitions also have fueled our growth. Dozens of individual community hospitals and small healthcare systems have joined our organization over the past decade. The successful integration of these facilities, along with the large scale acquisitions of Triad Hospitals, Inc. in 2007 and Health Management Associates, Inc. in 2014, has made us the largest publicly traded hospital company in the nation as measured by number of hospital facilities.

In 2007, CHS nearly doubled in size with the acquisition of Triad. In 2014, the organization’s size once again increased significantly with the acquisition of HMA.
Today, our organization includes 197 affiliated hospitals in 29 states. Across these hospitals, more than 135,000 employees and 22,000 physicians on their medical staffs share a fundamental commitment to quality, compassionate care.

In addition, our subsidiary Quorum Health Resources, LLC provides management and consulting services to approximately 150 independent hospital clients.

Community Health Systems, Inc. is headquartered in Franklin, Tennessee, and our common stock trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol CYH.
