The major business operations of UTC is divided into four segments: Otis, Carrier (which covers the UTC Climate, Controls & Security), Pratt & Whitney and Collins Aerospace (or the UTC Aerospace Systems).
The Otis segment engages in the design, manufacturing, installation and modernizing of passenger and freight elevators, escalators and moving walkways. It also offers maintenance and repair services for these products.
The Carrier division primarily manufactures and provides heating, ventilating, air conditioning (HVAC) and refrigeration services. It also offers services in the building installation, automation, integration, monitoring and maintenance of its products for residential, commercial, corporate, government and transportation systems.
The Pratt & Whitney segment serves as a major supplier for different aircraft engines for commercial, military, business jet and general aviation markets. Its services include fleet management and aftermarket maintenance, monitoring and repair and overhaul services for business jets, commercial and general aviation markets and military aircrafts.
Finally, Collins Aerospace mainly manufactures aircraft engine parts and components. It also offers services in the protection, aircraft sensing, engine control, surveillance and reconnaissance and environmental control systems of the engine components, as well as the electric power generation and management systems for the aircrafts, among others. The aerospace products and aftermarket service solutions services of the Collins segment mainly offers its services to business and general aviation markets, aircraft manufacturers, airlines, as well as military, space and submarine operations.
History
UTC was founded in 1934 as United Aircraft Corporation. It was formally established as United Technologies Corporation in 1975. The renaming of the company aimed to encompass the diversity of its products and services portfolio as it eventually ventured into other high technology fields aside from military aerospace.
Upon its initial establishment, United Technologies Corporation expanded in a period of three years with multiple mergers and acquisitions. The company’s first three acquisitions were fast and rather forced: Otis Elevator in 1976 and Carrier Refrigeration and Mostek in 1979.
In the 2000s the company ventured in the fire and security industry with its procurement of Chubb Security and Kidde. It expanded its aerospace business and acquired Schweizer Aircraft Corporation in 2004, then Boeing’s Rocketdyne division a year later, subsequently renaming it as Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne.
UTC further diversified its industry and acquired NORESCO, an energy service business in 2008. Two years later, the company established the United Technologies Research Center Ireland with an investment of $20 million. This aimed to further develop its energy and security systems.
The HVAC and air conditioning business of the company expanded in 2015 with the acquisition of CIAT Group, the leading HVAC manufacturing company in France. This procurement added to the UTC’s Carrier Air Conditioner venture.
The latest merger of UTC was with defense contractor Raytheon in 2019. Both companies established Raytheon Technologies Corporation, which is currently considered as the second largest aerospace and military defense company after Boeing.
