History

Glencore PLC was founded in 1974 as Marc Rich & Co. AG. It initially focused on producing and marketing ferrous and non-ferrous metals and minerals, as well as crude oil.

In 1981, the company acquired Granaria, a Dutch grain company which eventually paved the way to the establishment of Glencore Agriculture. This followed the acquisition of Xstrata (previously Südelektra Holding AG), an Anglo-Swiss international mining company in 1990.

Five years later in 1995, Glencore expanded their minerals and metals portfolio and acquired Prodeco, a coal project in Colombia.

The year 2011 became the defining point in the rise of the company as Aabar Investments of the United States Emirates heavily invested on Glencore with $850 million in its Initial Public Offer (IPO), making it the largest shareholder of the company. The following year International Petroleum Investment Company also added another $392 million in investments for Glencore’s IPO.

In 2012 the company diversified its agricultural segment with the acquisition of Viterra, improving its business in Australia and Canada.

In 2013, Glencore successfully completed its merger and full collaboration with Xstrata. During that same year, Glencore was able to expand its operations in 40 countries worldwide, handling 3% of the world’s oil consumption.

In 2017 Glencore PLC explored its energy resources as it made a joint venture with G500 in Mexico to launch 2,000 G500-branded gas stations.

It further diversified its portfolio by investing in different countries such as Colombia, Ecuador, Zambia, Brazil, the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
