Blackstone Inc. Short History

Founded in 1985 by Peter G. Peterson and Stephen Schwarzman, Blackstone started with a seed capital of $400,000. The name Blackstone came from the founders themselves: Schwarz is German for black, and Peter in Greek means stone or rock. Together, Peter and Stephen had worked at Lehman Brothers before they began building Blackstone.
Originally, the founders formed the firm as a mergers and acquisitions advisory business. In the same year of their founding, they had difficulty in raising their first fund as they had never experienced leading a leveraged buyout. But after the 1987 stock market crash, they finally made fundraising for its first private equity fund. It was also during this year that Blackstone collected $3.5 million in fees by giving advisory services on the merger of E. F. Hutton & Co. and Shearson Lehman Brothers.
Blackstone continued to progress. They also entered a 50:50 partnership with Larry Fink and Ralph Schlosstein. After two years, Peter and Stephen pursued a merchant banking model. They realized that many situations needed an investment partner rather than an advisor. So, with this leap in their business model, Blackstone gained the trust of Nikko Securities, Prudential Insurance Company, and General Motors.
Later on, Blackstone grew rapidly, launching its hedge funds business. In 1991, it also entered real estate investments, creating its Europe unit by acquiring a series of hotel businesses. Throughout these years until the 2000s, Blackstone was constantly active in real estate and corporate investment. It was in 2005-2007 when Blackstone made its largest leveraged buyouts.
In 2007, Blackstone made its initial public offering, driving it finally to be a public company. As of today, the firm continues its operations, primarily with private equity, real estate, hedge funds, and credit.
